These Shoes Stink... Literally! May 19, 2010 First let me say that I've been running in NB 587's for about 12 years. I'm 6-4, 220 lbs and in my opinion the support they give a big person is great. However, the last pair of running shoes I bought were Asic's for one reason only. My last two pairs of New Balance 587's give off a horrendous stench that smells very much like a cat's litter box. I noticed it at first when my next-to-last pair of 587's had been replaced and relegated to yard work shoes so I thought it had something to do with old components breaking down in the environment the shoes were being used in. But my most recent pair had to be replaced by new running shoes after only a few months, not because of wear, but because I couldn't stand the stink anymore! What's more I couldn't even move them into the "knock around shoes" category because of the smell. I tried leaving them in my garage but after it became nauseating to enter the garage I started leaving them outside on the back porch to wear when working in the yard. This didn't work either because my wife couldn't take the smell even when I was wearing them. Reluctantly, but it was very necessary, I simply had to throw them out with lots of shoe still left to be used. Seinfeld should have done a show on the stench of New Balance 587's instead of the the B.O. of the parking valet.
Great comfort from the start Feb 27, 2010 I've been wearing this model for about 9 years. A specialty shoe store recommended it because I needed the extra depth for orthotics. I have diabetic neuropathy and these shoes have been comfortable from the start with little time adjusting to new pairs (I've had at least 5 pairs). The neuropathy affects my balance so they give me some extra stability. The narrow back really helps. I wear them year round as the navy color is dark enough to not be conspicuous like white in the winter. The only complaint I have is that a few pairs have been squeaky- not sure if it has been the orthotic or the shoe itself (I did return one pair). I just ordered another pair after looking to see if there was anything new in the SL2 last. These are still my best choice.

Short life Nov 22, 2009 We have been purchasing New Balance shoes for years, but this pair only lasted 7 months before a hole poked through the top. What a disappointment!
Great running shoes. Sep 22, 2009 I run in these guys every week at least 4 days per week and they've been great now for the 3 months I've had them.
I would highly recommend them.

not very comfortable. didnt feel very supportive at all for this much money. Sep 02, 2009 ive gotta say something though, which may be a factor in my bad experience... the shoes looked as though they were used when i got them. maybe they were. there were human hairs, complete with follicles on the insole that i had to clean out before trying them out. some grime on the bottom i scrubbed off too. gross. i returned em. i wouldve liked to give a NEW pair a shot, but its too late for that.
